I'd like to bring my horse to the water treadmill, but am not sure how it all works..?!!
The first session is all about the horse. There are zero expectations - the aim of the game is to have a horse that isn't stressed and leaves us being happy to come back for session 2. Afterall they haven't seen the big shiny box with a black belt that moves on before! Once we get the horse to load, we need to teach it to walk on the conveyor belt. If they cope with this well, and it's clinically reasonable to do so, we put a tiny bit of water into the bottom of the container. The horse then needs to see that as well as the water arriving, it also has to leave. It's a lot for them to take in and therefore we don't rush this at all.
We allow 45 minutes for the first appointment, and highly recommend that the second visit is within a week to build on the learning experiences of the first week.
How quickly will I see any results/improvements?
As with any new form of exercise, what you put in, you get out. Noticeable changes to muscles occur after 3 weeks of using the treadmill twice a week. The absolute minimum we recommend is one session a week for 4-6 weeks. In all honesty, anything less that this won’t really be of any huge benefit.
How long does a session last?
We allow up to 45 minutes for the introduction, however, please remember just how much we are asking the horse to do, so this may also be a lot shorter, depending on each individual presentation.
The horse needs to learn how to balance itself, therefore the first few sessions will vary in length according to their ability to do this.
A fit, well balanced horse will have a 25 minute session.
Are there any age restrictions for the water treadmill?
Horses as young as 2 can use the treadmill, indeed it is a great way to gently develop their proprioception and core muscles. Veterans can also easily enjoy the treadmill, as it has been shown to help arthritic joints. Again, session lengths will vary according to fitness and ability.
Are there any size restrictions for the water treadmill?
To date we have had miniature shetlands and 18.3hh sport horses use the treadmill! So far so good! Weight wise, anything over 850kgs will put a huge strain on the motors of the treadmill, so please consider this when booking the big boys in!
What do I need to bring with me?
Please bring a bridle, ensure the horse has clean legs and picked out feet. Tails should be tied up ‘polo pony’ style so that it doesn’t drag in the water.
How many sessions will my horse require?
This varies according to each individual case. For rehab cases as a general rule, we recommend twice a week for the first 3 weeks, reducing to once a week until presentation goals are achieved. Maintenance sessions at 3-4 week intervals after the initial intensive sessions are always useful.
Do I need a vet referral to come along for a water treadmill session?
No, you don’t need a vet referral, however, we feel it is important to work with your equine health team.
Can I claim any sessions on my horse insurance policy?
Yes, hydrotherapy is recognised by many insurance companies, however, you will need a referral from your vet. If your vet is referring for a specific claim, the hydrotherapy will be included as part of the main claim 'pot' rather than just the complementary allowance.
Can I bring my horse for rehabilitation post-surgery?
The treadmill is a great way to start post op exercise, once the initial part of the rehabilitation has been completed. The treadmill can also be used dry to assist with the very early days of 10 minutes of walking etc.
What other services do you offer?
We offer the following onsite services:
Equine chiropractic and myofascial release work
Rider biomechanics/treatments
Bridle and bit fitting
Can I use the treadmill as part of my horse’s fitness regime?
The treadmill compliments any fitness regime. In 15 minutes, the horse will complete the equivalent of 600 raised poles, in a straight line and in controlled environment. This therefore makes the treadmill a very unique exercise modality, which works a wide range of muscles. It is well recognised that best way to achieve optimum fitness is via the use of several forms of exercise or ‘cross training’.
How cold is the water?
The water isn’t chilled, so will fluctuate slightly according to the ambient temperature. It is generally cold tap temperature of around 10 degrees.
How is the water cleaned?
The water passes through a ‘macro’ filter which takes residues from the water. It is then passed through two filtration tanks which purify the water, and finally past several UV lights, which kills the bacteria. The water is completely replaced on a regular basis.
Can I book a regular time slot?
Yes!
I’d still like to know more, can I come for a visit?
Yes, absolutely!
